
Best CS2 Settings – 2026 from PC Optimization Specialists / Faceit 10

The default CS2 settings are designed to make the game look good in Valve's showcases and marketing materials. They are not designed for competition. Here's what happens when you play on defaults:
Input lag increases with unpredictable ms delay because V-Sync is enabled - you get a stable frametime at the cost of input lag, and NVIDIA Reflex/AMD Anti-Lag adds its own variations to that mix. Unfortunately CS2 has a completely broken fps limiter, and solutions like RTSS are blocked on Faceit, which puts players in a bad position when trying to achieve smooth, predictable gameplay.
FPS drops 30-60% due to unnecessary visual effects that don't help in competition - they actively get in the way. Shadows on Very High? They'll generate pretty shadows, but they eat frames.
Model visibility is purely preferential - Player Contrast is set however you like, and high shader settings, while visually very nice, do nothing for gameplay.
The three pillars of competitive settings are: stable FPS above your monitor's refresh rate, minimizing and stabilizing input lag at every stage of the pipeline, and maximum visual clarity on every map.
CS2 Graphics Settings: Full Table with Explanations
The table below contains recommended values for three hardware profiles. Don't blindly copy pro player settings - if you're planning to follow advice about 8x MSAA "makes game smoother" or anything like that, congratulations, you have no idea what you're doing, and neither does the person recommending it, even if they're a pro player. The only case for MSAA is 2x on Vertigo, where the rafters are visible from below on B and Valve can't be bothered to fix it. Below I present approximate settings for the three hardware groups. Dynamic Shadows are missing from the table - that setting is always left ON. Treat the resolutions as guidelines too - we respect yours. We have 4:3 aspects because they give more FPS, but objectively 16:10 or even 16:9 are significantly better, and on top of that you often have your own custom configs anyway.

Key Setting Explanations
4:3 Stretched resolution isn't nostalgia for CS 1.6. Stretched horizontally expands player models, making the target visually wider. At 1280x960, models are around 33% wider than at native 16:9. The downside is a smaller field of view on the sides, but most fights happen in the central area of the screen.
V-Sync must be off. V-Sync syncs frames to the monitor's refresh rate, which sounds good, but adds an entire render cycle of delay (6-16 ms depending on FPS). In a game where reaction time is 150-250 ms, adding 15 ms is a massive loss.
NVIDIA Reflex is the only sync you want enabled. Instead of waiting for the GPU, Reflex tells the CPU: "don't send the next frame to render until the GPU is ready." Result: smaller frame queue, lower input lag. Boost mode keeps the GPU at higher clocks even under lower load.
Shadows High vs Low is a controversial topic. On Low you lose player shadows that can reveal an enemy's position around a corner. On High you eat 15-25 FPS. Compromise: Medium gives player shadows without the full performance cost. If your FPS drops below your monitor's refresh rate, go to Low.
Boost Player Contrast is the most important setting most players don't know about. It creates a subtle outline around player models that makes them stand out more clearly from backgrounds. Zero FPS cost. There is absolutely no reason to have this off.
Pro tip from KaRzye: If you don't know what monitor you have and how many Hz it supports, type this in the CS2 console: sys_info. You'll see the exact display parameters. Your FPS should always be higher than your monitor's Hz - we are talking e-sports title. 144 Hz monitor = aim for 200+ FPS.
Mouse Settings and Sensitivity: Science, Not Guesswork
Mouse sensitivity in CS2 is one of the most personal aspects of settings, but there is hard data that helps find the right range.

Audio Settings: Hearing Footsteps Is Half of Every Round Won

Sound in CS2 is your second crosshair. Properly configured audio lets you know where the enemy is coming from before you see them. Badly configured audio makes footsteps from the left sound like they're coming from the right, and the flashbang was so loud it rattled the windows.
Below are general recommendations - but be careful, test everything and know your hardware.

Crisp vs. Smooth vs. Natural is a matter of taste, but the data is clear: Crisp boosts the 2-6 kHz range where footsteps, reload sounds and defuse sounds live. Smooth cuts those frequencies. Natural is flat. In competitive ranked, Crisp is the dominant choice.
L/R Isolation is the setting most guides skip. 0% means sound from the left channel also bleeds into the right (crossfeed). It helps with natural sound but makes it harder to precisely locate the source. 100% is full separation. Optimal is 50-80% depending on your headphones.
Console commands for audio:
snd_mixahead 0.05 - slightly improves FPS, increases audio delay.
Crosshair: Settings That Actually Matter
Crosshair is the topic where players spend hours on workshop maps testing colors and thicknesses. It's worth knowing what actually affects effectiveness versus what's purely cosmetic.
Dynamic vs. static: Dynamic crosshair expands during movement and shooting. Visually cool, but the information it gives (spread accuracy) is available in your muscle memory after a few hundred hours. Pro players use static crosshairs in 90%+ of cases. Less visual noise = better focus.
Color: White, bright green (#00FF00), light blue or yellow. Avoid red (blends with blood effects) and dark colors (invisible on dark maps). The best colors are ones that do not appear naturally on CS2 maps.
Thickness and gap: Thin crosshair (Size 1-3, Gap -2 to 0) is preferred. Too thick and it covers heads at long distances. Too thin and it's invisible on bright backgrounds. Outline 0.5-1 helps at both extremes.

Launch Options and Console Commands in 2026
Launch options in CS2 work differently than in CS:GO. Many popular commands have been removed or do nothing anymore. Here's what actually works:

Replace 240 with your monitor's Hz. That's enough. Every additional flag is either placebo or a potential problem, unless something is tested.
Myth: -tickrate 128. There is no -tickrate command in CS2. CS2 has sub-tick, which registers the exact time of a shot between ticks. You cannot change this with a launch option. If you have this in your launch options, remove it.
NVIDIA Control Panel: Settings That Make a Difference (and Those That Don't)

The NVIDIA Control Panel is where you can gain or lose milliseconds. Some settings have a real impact, others are pure placebo. Table below for most users:

Low Latency Mode on Ultra is the most important setting in the NVIDIA panel for CS2. It works similarly to NVIDIA Reflex but at the driver level. If you have Reflex in-game, use both simultaneously. BlurBusters tests show the combination of Reflex + LLM Ultra gives the lowest input lag.
Note for AMD users: In AMD Software (Adrenalin), enable AMD Anti-Lag 2 (if available for CS2). Set Radeon Chill to Off, Surface Format Optimization to On, and Shader Cache to AMD Optimized.
Windows and BIOS Optimization: System-Level Tweaks
In-game settings everyone can change (hopefully). The real fun is your OS and BIOS.
Windows
Game Mode: Off. Despite the name, Game Mode in Windows 11 can cause micro-stutters. BlurBusters community testing confirms a clear difference in frametimes with Game Mode off. Until Microsoft takes the gaming side of their OS seriously.
Xbox Game Bar and DVR: Off completely. Records in the background, eats GPU and CPU.
Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS): Test On/Off - it depends on your system config. More often helps on Nvidia cards.
Power Plan: Set to "High Performance" or "Ultimate Performance". The Balanced plan lowers CPU clocks - come on, it's a naive setting with a ton of interrupts that generate stutters. People push this without any understanding of the consequences because they saw a few more FPS on a graph.
Antivirus protection: Add the CS2 folder to Windows Defender exclusions (or whatever solution you're using). Real-time scanning can cause frametime spikes.
Disable Full Screen Optimizations for cs2.exe. Right-click the exe, Properties, Compatibility, check the box. This eliminates the DWM composition layer that adds latency. On the latest Windows 11 builds this probably no longer makes any difference for new games - I haven't tested it though. CS2 is on dx11 so you could argue it still counts as an "old game".
BIOS
XMP / EXPO: If you have DDR4/DDR5 RAM and haven't enabled XMP (Intel) or EXPO (AMD) in BIOS, your RAM is probably running at default, lower speeds. DDR4 default is 2133 MHz, even if your sticks are 3600 MHz. Enabling XMP can give 10-15% more FPS in CS2.
Resize BAR / Smart Access Memory: Enable. Allows the CPU to access the full GPU memory instead of 256 MB chunks. Gain: 3-8% FPS depending on the card.
Warning: BIOS. BIOS changes can cause system instability if you don't know what you're doing. XMP/EXPO is generally safe (the RAM manufacturer tested those profiles) BUT not every CPU has the same quality and can handle the same speeds. Radar, Viewmodel and HUD Settings
Radar is a tool most players ignore or use at default settings. A properly configured radar gives you information about the whole map at a glance. Not mandatory and preference-dependent, but recommended.
Key radar commands:

cl_radar_always_centered 0 (radar doesn't center on you, you see more of the map)
cl_radar_scale 0.4 (zoom out to see the whole map)

Viewmodel: Gun position on screen. Right side is the standard, but left can help when peeking from the right side (doesn't block the angle). Commands:

viewmodel_offset_z -1.5
You also have something called a dominant eye - depending on which one that is, test it and set the viewmodel to the left or right side accordingly, it can help you focus more easily.

Jump into deathmatch. Check that FPS is consistently above your monitor's Hz. Watch your 1% low FPS. If 1% low is below your refresh rate, you have a bottleneck.
Step 7: Fine-tuning
Test each setting individually. Change one thing, play 5 minutes, check FPS. This lets you identify which setting gives the biggest gain on your hardware.
