Ranked in Deadlock: Valve Quietly Changed the Scoring System

Deadlock Ranked Points and Systems

The 30 July 2026 patch note is clear: a win or a loss in ranked gives you around 250 rank points, with a small deviation depending on what the matchmaker expected from the match and on win streaks. That is how it was written, and that is what every guide and the wiki still repeat today.

This hasn't been right in the game for a few days now, and no one has mentioned it.

What the match history shows

For us, the line is clear-cut. Matches from August 1 and earlier are at 250: +250 for a win, -250 for a loss, and one at -175, which isn’t a break at all, just a cut to zero at the bottom of the sub-rank. All more recent matches are at 300 - four in a row, without exception.

On another account, which is publicly visible, an even wider range can be seen during the same period: +300, +430, +480, and -300. So it’s not the case that the rate simply shifted from 250 to 300.

This isn't a bonus for playing well

The first thing that comes to mind is that Valve has finally added a component based on individual performance. We checked it out, and unfortunately, no….

On this second account, the match that ended in fourth place, with a B rating, yielded +430. The match that ended in second place, with a higher rating, yielded +300. If your performance had determined the outcome, the order would have been reversed. There is no correlation between the ratings and the points. This is Lickely due to a winning streak, but still weird and inconsistent mess.

Valve hasn't published the formula, so no one on the outside can tell the difference between an uncertain rating and a standard adjustment for the match's difficulty. And that's the biggest problem with this whole situation.

A change that isn't mentioned in any note

It didn't make it into any patch notes. It's not on the Deadlock wiki or on any gaming news site. The only mention we found was a brief comment from Yoshi on Discord - and, of course, the in-game sighting, heh.

What this change does not fix

Larger and fluctuating numbers don't change where they come from. In what Valve wrote, there's still no component that depends on how you played: no kills, no assists, no damage, and no lobby rank. The price has changed, not the rule.

We break down the entire system in a separate article: Deadlock Ranked: Ranks and Points Explained. There, you'll find all eleven ranks, entry thresholds, calibration rules, and protection against demotion.

Frequently asked questions

How many rank points does a Deadlock match give now?

The official note lists approximately 250, but since early August 2026, values ranging from about 250 to 480 have been visible in the game, varying across different accounts and matches. The change wasn't included in any patch notes; only Yoshi mentioned it on Discord.

Is a higher stake a reward for playing well?

There is no evidence to support this. In the matches observed, fourth place with a lower rating yielded more points than second place with a higher rating. It is more likely that this is due to rating uncertainty immediately after recalibration, but Valve has not published the formula, so this remains a hypothesis.

Why did I lose less than usual?

Usually because you had fewer points left than the loss was worth, so it was clipped at zero. It is not a reward for playing well.

How many wins does it take to reach a rank now?

It’s impossible to give a single number as long as the rate is variable. The thresholds haven’t changed: a sub - rank is 1,000 points, and a full rank is 7,000. Track your progress over blocks of ten matches, not based on individual results.
