WARDOGS Optimization 2026: what actually costs you frames

A week after the WARDOGS launch, frames are not the biggest problem players have. We read the 500 most recent negative reviews on Steam. 64 of them mention cheats, 53 the servers, 29 crashes, and only 21 mention FPS. Meanwhile the first page of Google is filling up with guides on how to boost FPS in WARDOGS. Most people have a different problem and lowering shadows will not touch it.
Work out which of the three failures you have before you spend money on hardware or on a service. Ours included.
What the reviews show
You can repeat this. We pulled the 500 newest negative WARDOGS reviews in English through the public Steam API, as of 14 September 2026, and counted word occurrences. One review can land in several rows at once.
| Topic | Out of 500 negative reviews |
|---|---|
| Cheaters and anti-cheat | 64 |
| Servers | 53 |
| Crashes | 29 |
| FPS and smoothness | 21 |
| Login queue | 14 |
| Optimization | 13 |
| Lag | 11 |
| Getting kicked from the server | 7 |
| Stutter | 6 |
| RAM and VRAM | 4 |
The game is doing well, mind you. As of 14 September that is 53,537 reviews, 43,332 of them positive, so 81 percent and a "Very Positive" rating. SteamDB recorded a peak of 428,666 players at once on 13 September, and the publisher announced 1.25 million copies sold the day after launch. At that scale, trouble getting into the game comes from the queue and the servers, not from your PC.
Three things that look the same
You say "it stutters". Three different failures sit under that word and each has a different cure.
| What you see | What it is | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth picture, but the enemy teleports and you die around the corner | The server or your connection | A different server, lower ping, cable instead of Wi-Fi. Hardware has nothing to do with it |
| The FPS counter drops in a dense fight, on an empty map it is fine | The CPU ceiling | View distance, character detail, effects. A stronger graphics card will not move it |
| FPS evenly low everywhere and it falls with resolution | The graphics card ceiling | Resolution, upscaling, shadows, lighting |
| One-off hitches on a new weapon, vehicle or effect | Shader compilation | Goes away after a few matches. Comes back after every patch and every driver change |
| A hitch when you drive into a new part of the map | Asset streaming | A faster drive, more RAM, fewer things running in the background |
The test takes one match. Turn the frame counter on in the Steam settings, in the in-game overlay section, and watch two numbers at once: frames and your ping in the server browser. If the frames hold steady and the game still behaves unpredictably, it is not the hardware and no system optimization will fix it.
BIOS, memory, network and input we go through together on your screen. We measure before and after in your games, so you see the difference yourself, before we hang up.
First thing to switch off: frame generation
WARDOGS has DLSS frame generation. In the Season 1 changes from 9 September, BULKHEAD listed two items: frame generation can now be turned off without restarting the game and two crash paths in the frame generation pipeline were fixed. Next to that, a note about more detailed GPU crash reports.
Two days later, in patch 0.11 from 12 September, one sentence sits under "Other Fixes": More GPU crashes addressed. The studio has come back to the same place for the third time in four days.
Frame generation has no place in a competitive shooter even without the crashes. To insert a frame between two real ones, the engine has to wait for the second one first. The counter goes up while the picture on your screen gets older. You pay in latency for a number in the corner of the screen.
Upscaling is a different thing and do not switch that off blind. Steam states that the minimum requirements are calculated with upscaling on.
A GPU crash does not have to mean your GPU
The game closes with a driver error and the first thought goes to overclocking, temperatures or replacing the card. In the first week of Early Access that thought leads the wrong way. In two consecutive patches the developers were fixing crashes on their own side, and they wrote themselves that they now get more detailed reports.
Before you decide it is the hardware, do three things in order. Turn off frame generation. Take off any overclock on the card and the memory, including the factory OC profile and the undervolt curve, because that is where most crashes that look like a game bug come from. Install the driver from scratch instead of updating over the top.
The Season 1 changes have one more item: render target pool became configurable. It is the pool of graphics memory used for intermediate buffers. With 8 GB of VRAM and crashes in dense moments there is something to gain there before you think about a new card.
Only now the settings, and in a different order than everywhere else
The official requirements table says more than you see at first glance. The recommendation is an i7-12700K or a Ryzen 7 5700X with an RTX 3070, and the promised result is 1440p on medium and "70fps+" natively. Not 144. Seventy, on medium, on a 3070 class card.
The jump in the CPU column is bigger than the jump in the graphics column. Together with a hundred players, vehicles, building and destroying structures on a map of 256 square kilometres, that gives one conclusion: in a dense fight the CPU sets the ceiling. That is why dropping everything to Low gives so little. Resolution and shadows do not touch what the CPU is busy with.
The order that makes sense in this game:
- Frame generation off. Latency and crashes, described above.
- Everything that reduces the number of visible objects. View distance, character and vehicle detail, effect density. This group takes load off the CPU, the rest does not.
- Lighting and shadows. The most expensive group on the graphics card side in Unreal Engine 5.
- Upscaling. Only when the above is not enough.
- Resolution. The last resort, because it costs you enemy visibility.
What this guide does not have
You will not find a list saying "shadows on low, textures on high, effects on medium". We have not measured this game ourselves yet, and without a measurement such a list would be copied from somebody else’s article. The game is four days old and has had three patches. Any of them could have changed the cost of any option.
Our own measurements, before and after, together with 1% lows, will go in at this same address. For the same reason we do not promise you a specific percentage FPS gain after optimization. That percentage depends on what we find in your system.
What you can do today
Diagnosis first, purchases second. One match with the frame counter and your ping on screen will show you which column of the table above you are in. If it is the server, no hardware and no service will help, and we will tell you that before we take a single złoty from you.
If it is your PC, we have two routes. We run a free system scan on our Discord, with no account and no commitment. A full PC optimization is a remote session with a before and after measurement, a restore point and six months of support. If the hardware is what sets the ceiling, the configurator on the home page will show you which tier matches your expectations, together with 1% lows and a note on what limits the result.
Three pieces we wrote before launch come in handy along the way: what the requirements table really says, why the CPU is the limit in this game and how to fix the anti-cheat and 0xc000007b errors.
Sources and date
As of 14 September 2026. The review numbers come from the public Steam API, pulled that day. The patch quotes come from the publisher announcements on Steam: "Pre-Load Live & Season 1 Changelog" from 9 September and "Scheduled Maintenance & Patch 0.11" from 12 September. The system requirements and the upscaling notes come from the WARDOGS store page. The player peak is from SteamDB. The game is in Early Access, the publisher is Team17 and the studio is BULKHEAD. We update this text at the same address instead of starting a new one with every patch.
