Intel or AMD for gaming in 2027: buy now or wait for Nova Lake and Zen 6

Intel or AMD for gaming in 2027 is a question with no certain answer yet, but we already know what will decide it: how the new processors do in tests, support for the APX instructions, and whether you want to replace your motherboard. If you are building a PC for several years, this guide will help you decide whether to buy now or wait, and what to look for in reviews.
Where things stand at the end of 2026
AMD leads in games today. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D and 9800X3D with extra 3D V-Cache sit at the top of most gaming tests, and the gap between the two is usually 1 to 4 percent. Intel Core Ultra 200 series processors do worse in games but handle multithreaded work well. We covered this when asking whether the Ryzen 9850X3D is worth buying.
In 2027 both vendors move to a new generation. What is true today may stop being true in six months.
What is coming
| Feature | Intel Nova Lake | AMD Zen 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Core Ultra 400 | Ryzen, Olympic Ridge family |
| Desktop launch | from Q1 2027, according to leaks | late 2026 or 2027, according to leaks |
| Socket | new, LGA1954 | AM5, according to AMD documents leaked in August 2026 |
| APX | yes, confirmed by Intel | not confirmed |
| AVX10.2 | yes, confirmed by Intel | not confirmed |
The launch dates come from leaks. AMD has not formally announced Zen 6 or its socket yet.
We connect to your PC remotely, save a restore point, then work through power, drivers and input. The BIOS we go through together on a Discord call while you show us the screen with your phone. The same benchmark at the end shows how much of it landed. For six months after the session we stay with you on Discord.
Why APX could tip the balance towards Intel
APX doubles the number of CPU registers from 16 to 32. According to Intel simulations, code compiled for APX executes about 10% fewer instructions and over 20% fewer memory stores. Microsoft has already started testing APX support in Windows 11.
If Windows, drivers and game engines start being compiled for APX and Zen 6 does not get it, Intel processors will be the only ones to benefit for a whole generation. For a PC bought for four or five years, that is a real argument.
Two caveats. Intel's numbers come from SPEC tests, and nobody has measured APX in games yet. On top of that, game developers have to support older processors, so games will adopt APX with a delay, probably some time after Nova Lake launches.
What to choose in your situation
You already have an AM5 platform
Wait for Zen 6 tests. If the new Ryzens really land on AM5, you will swap only the CPU after a BIOS update, with no new board or memory. Moving to Intel would mean buying an LGA1954 board, and that changes the math.
You are building from scratch in 2027
This is where Intel has its strongest arguments. A new socket means buying a board anyway, so you lose nothing by switching platforms, and you get APX and AVX10.2. Hold off until the first independent tests of both generations. If Nova Lake comes close to Zen 6 in games and Zen 6 does not get APX, Intel will be the more sensible choice for years to come.
You have to buy now
For games alone, a Ryzen with 3D V-Cache is still the strongest choice today. Buying now, you do not get APX from either vendor, so that argument does not apply yet. Pick a platform that still has one more processor generation ahead of it.
You game and work on one PC
Code compilation, video editing and local AI models will benefit from APX and AVX10.2 sooner than games, because such programs are more often compiled for the newest instructions. Intel's advantage may show up earlier here.
What to look for in Nova Lake and Zen 6 reviews
- 1% low at 1080p. At this resolution you can best see which CPU limits the game.
- The supported instruction list. Check APX and AVX10.2 in the spec of the exact model.
- Platform cost. Count CPU, board and memory together, and on AM5 check whether your board will get a BIOS for Zen 6.
- Power draw in games. It affects cooling, noise and the power supply.
- APX tests. When the first programs and games compiled for APX appear, compare them on both platforms.
In short: if you have AM5, wait for Zen 6. If you are building from scratch in 2027, you have the most reasons today to seriously consider Intel, but the final call is worth making after the first tests. If you are buying for games now, take a Ryzen with 3D V-Cache. If you want us to pick parts for your games and budget, take a look at our PC build service.
Intel or AMD for gaming in 2027?
It depends. On AM5, wait for Zen 6. When building from scratch, Intel Nova Lake with APX has strong arguments, but make the call after the first tests of both generations.
Is it worth waiting for Nova Lake?
If you are building a new PC and can wait until 2027, yes. According to leaks, the first desktop models will appear from the first quarter of 2027.
Will Zen 6 be on AM5?
AMD documents leaked in August 2026 list Zen 6 processors under the AM5 platform, but AMD has not formally announced it yet.
What is APX and does it matter in games?
APX doubles the number of CPU registers. It will start to matter in games once developers compile them for APX, which will take some time.
Which gaming CPU should I buy now?
For games alone, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or 9850X3D. The gaming difference between them is usually a few percent.
Will Nova Lake fit my LGA1851 board?
Based on what is known so far, no. Nova Lake moves to the new LGA1954 socket.
Frames dropping exactly when the fight starts?
That drop lands in the one second that decides the round, and no graphics preset fixes it. We tune Windows, drivers and network remotely, and the BIOS together with you on a Discord call. You measure it yourself, in your own game, before and after, with us watching.
