Intel APX in Windows 11: what the new toggle does and when it speeds up games

Intel APX w Windows 11

Intel APX in Windows 11 is a new x86 instruction set extension that Microsoft has just started testing: build 29695 added a toggle called "Let Windows use APX for better performance". APX doubles the number of general purpose CPU registers from 16 to 32. It only works on processors with APX support, though, and only in programs compiled for APX.

Below is what actually showed up in the system, what Intel's numbers mean, when it might reach games and why AMD is the biggest question mark right now.

What showed up in Windows 11

The toggle appeared in build 29695.1001, released on 23 October 2026 in the Experimental (Future Platforms) channel of the Windows Insider program. It was spotted by a user called Xeno, who posted it on X. The option sits in Settings, under System, Advanced, For developers, and needs a restart. Not every tester can see it.

Microsoft also added APX detection to the Windows SDK and support for the new registers in the WinDbg debugger. For now it is groundwork for future processors. Microsoft has not said when APX will reach stable Windows 11, and features from the experimental channel may never leave testing.

What APX does

Registers are the fastest memory a CPU has. When there are not enough of them, a program has to park data in cache and fetch it back. APX raises their number from 16 to 32, adds three-operand instructions that do not overwrite their inputs, and new conditional instructions that let code skip some branches.

Old programs run unchanged on APX processors. It only works one way: a program compiled only for APX will not run on an older processor.

How much it gives according to Intel

Metric according to IntelChange
Memory loadsabout 10% fewer
Memory storesover 20% fewer
Instruction countabout 10% fewer

These figures come from Intel simulations on the SPEC CPU 2017 Integer suite. They show how much work the compiled code does. How that translates into overall PC speed is not known yet. Nobody has published game tests with APX yet, and Microsoft has given no measurements. Headlines like "Windows 11 is 15% faster" are someone's interpretation of these numbers.

Fewer loads and stores are still a real benefit for games that put a heavy load on the CPU: simulations, strategy games, games with many objects. How much of that ends up as frames per second, only tests will show.

When you will see it in games

Three things have to come together:

  1. A CPU with APX. Intel confirmed APX for Nova Lake (Core Ultra 400) processors in documentation from November 2025. According to leaks from July 2026, the first desktop models are due in stores from the first quarter of 2027, on the new LGA1954 socket.
  2. Windows with APX enabled. Today only in the experimental channel, with no date for everyone.
  3. Games compiled for APX. This is the slowest part. Developers also have to support older CPUs, so they either maintain two code paths or wait until APX is common. Earlier extensions such as AVX2 reached games years after the processors that supported them came out.

The system itself, drivers and programs that Microsoft and vendors compile themselves may benefit sooner. Games will come later.

AMD and Zen 6: the biggest question mark

APX is no longer an Intel-only project. In May 2026, Intel and AMD announced through the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group that they are standardizing APX for both vendors. AMD has not said, however, in which generation it will add it.

The compiler patches AMD sent for Zen 6 (the znver6 target in binutils and GCC) list the new instructions AVX512_BMM, AVX_NE_CONVERT, AVX_IFMA, AVX_VNNI_INT8 and AVX512_FP16. APX is not on that list. AMD has not officially ruled it out, but nothing suggests Zen 6 will get APX either.

In our view, if Zen 6 ships without APX, AMD will be making a mistake. For a whole generation, Intel would be the only maker of gaming CPUs that Windows and new compilers can fully optimize code for. Today AMD leads in games thanks to its X3D processors, but the APX advantage will grow every year as more programs start using it.

What to do about it today

There is nothing to turn on in stable Windows 11, and no desktop processor available today supports APX. Do not buy new hardware because of this news. If you are planning a new PC for 2027, add APX to the list of things you will check in Nova Lake and Zen 6 reviews. If you want us to help you pick parts for your games, take a look at our PC build service.

Meanwhile, in your current PC the most performance can usually be recovered in the system settings, RAM and BIOS. That is what we measure and fix in our remote PC optimization.

What is Intel APX?

It is an x86-64 instruction set extension that doubles general purpose registers from 16 to 32 and adds new instructions. Intel introduced it in 2023.

Will APX speed up my current PC?

No. APX needs a processor that supports it. No desktop CPU available today has it, and a Windows update will not change that.

Which processors support APX?

Intel confirmed APX for Nova Lake (Core Ultra 400) and the Diamond Rapids server chips. AMD has not said which Ryzen generation will get it.

Will Zen 6 support APX?

It is not known. AMD's compiler patches for Zen 6 do not list APX, and AMD has not confirmed it for this generation.

How many FPS will APX give in games?

Nobody has measured that yet. Intel quotes about 10% fewer instructions and over 20% fewer memory stores in SPEC tests. How that translates into frames, tests will show.

How do I turn on APX in Windows 11?

For now only in build 29695 from the Experimental channel, in Settings: System, Advanced, For developers. Without an APX processor the toggle does nothing.

Frames dropping exactly when the fight starts?

That drop lands in the one second that decides the round, and no graphics preset fixes it. We tune Windows, drivers and network remotely, and the BIOS together with you on a Discord call. You measure it yourself, in your own game, before and after, with us watching.
