After years of a single matchmaking system, Valve has finally split Standard from Ranked. That changes more than the way you fight for a rank: it changes how you approach every game.

I sit in Phantom+ and watch replays every day in coaching sessions, so I see what is going on. Plenty of players who were in Phantom before the matchmaking changes had an inflated rank, and calibration is now bringing them back down to earth. Painful, but fair.

How do you unlock Ranked?

The entry requirements are simple. Valve is cutting off smurfs and boosted accounts:

Requirement

Details

60 wins in Standard Mode

You have to win 60 games in standard mode. Losses do not count.

3 heroes with at least 15 wins each

Each hero needs 15 wins in Standard Mode separately before it is unlocked for Ranked.

No active penalties

Low Priority, comms ban, anything. With an active penalty you will not get into the queue.

That is a sensible restriction. Dota 2 runs a similar calibration system and it works. Nobody wants to play against a friend logged into a borrowed account, farming a rank with no idea about the game.

Calibration: 8 games that set your starting point

Once you meet the requirements, you face 8 calibration matches. Three things are worth knowing in advance:

You play calibration solo. There are no parties in calibration.

The highest starting rank is Oracle VI. Even if you were Phantom, you start lower.

After 8 games you get a rank based on performance, not on wins alone.

From what I have seen, the system runs on a combination of win rate and impact on the match. Going 8/8 in calibration does not guarantee Phantom. If you farmed solo in those games, inted and added no value, you will get a lower rank despite the wins.

Rank Points

Every ranked match gives or takes points. The maths looks like this:

Situation

Points

Win (standard)

+300 RP

Loss (standard)

-300 RP

Winstreak bonus (from 3 wins in a row)

+70, rising by +20 for each further win

Maximum winstreak bonus (5+ wins)

+90 RP per match

The bump from 250 to 300 points per match came in the patch of 2 August 2026. In practice you climb subranks faster than at the start of the season. We covered that change in more detail in our piece on Deadlock rank points.

How many points do you need?

Subrank promotion: 1000 RP, roughly 3-4 wins in a row

Full rank promotion (for example Mystic VI to Ritualist I): 2000 RP. The threshold is higher on purpose, to separate the tiers.

Eternus: a percentile system. There are no fixed thresholds; ranks update based on your position relative to the other Eternus players.

Demotion protection (Rank Protection)

Here Valve did something sensible. You do not lose the rank straight away:

Protection

How many games

Subrank protection

2 matches. You only drop in the third match after losing the points.

Full rank protection

5 matches. That is how many you have to lose to drop a full rank.

The shield icon under the progress bar shows how many protection lives you have left. Good for the mental side, because one loss is no reason to panic.

All Deadlock ranks, from lowest to highest

#

Rank

Material / badge

0

Obscurus (Unranked)

-

1

Initiate

Brick

2

Seeker

Stone

3

Acolyte

Iron

4

Sentinel

Bronze

5

Mystic

Silver

6

Ritualist

Gold

7

Emissary

Platinum

8

Oracle

Diamond

9

Phantom

-

10

Ascendant

-

11

Eternus

-

Every rank has 6 subranks (I-VI), where VI is the highest. Eternus works differently, on percentiles: I = 0%, II = 25%, III = 50%, IV = 70%, V = 85%, VI = 95%.

Pre-Match Phase: hero swaps and bans

This is a new mechanic in ranked and it was put in deliberately. Before every ranked match you get a window in which:

30 seconds to swap hero. You can switch to another hero from your unlocked roster, but only once.

You do not see the enemy swaps. You only see their starting line-up.

You cannot take a hero someone already has. If somebody picked him before you, you choose another.

Bans: 3 banned characters in ranked, only 2 in Standard.

Lane swap. In the same window you can change your starting lane.

It is about team composition balance, not counter-picking in the style of „they have Haze, I will take Apollo”. It is about your team not ending up with five carries and no initiator. If you want to know who is worth having in your pool at all, have a look at the 2026 tier list.

Parties and their limits

For some players this will hurt:

A maximum of 2 players per party. No trios, no full stacks.

The rank gap in a duo is one rank at most. Mystic with Ritualist will pass, Mystic with Oracle will not.

Eternus: only with another Eternus, and at most 3 subranks apart.

Calibration: solo only.

Valve says this will change. Dota 2 parties go up to five, so Deadlock will probably get that too. For now it is solo or duo.

Abandons: what happens when somebody leaves

The rules depend on when the player leaves the match:

Time of the abandon

Consequences

Before the 5 minute mark

The match is voided for everyone except the leaver and his duo. The leaver gets a penalty.

After the 5 minute mark

The match is voided for the leaver team, and its players can leave without a penalty. If they win anyway, the match counts as a win. The leaver gets a penalty and a loss.

The whole leaver team leaves

Automatic loss, the opponent wins.

Penalties escalate: first a queue timeout, then games in low priority. Winning changes nothing. If you abandoned, you get a loss and a penalty.

Leaderboards: how to get on them

Leaderboard

Requirements (last 30 days)

Global (top 1000 per region)

75 matches and at least 500 games played in total

Hero-specific (top 1000 per hero)

30 matches on that hero and 100 lifetime wins with him

Regions: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania.

The first season: Beta Season 1

From 30 July to 7 October 2026. After the season you get a permanent badge for the highest rank you reached. Later seasons will probably be longer, with splits in the middle.

The most common mistakes I see in coaching sessions

From going through replays of players in the Mystic-Ritualist bracket, here is what ruins the climb:

You do not know your hero. You enter ranked with 15 wins, but 15 wins in Standard is not the same as being ready for Ranked. Train in Standard until you feel confident.

No counter-building. This is the main thing separating players who climb from players standing still. Without knowing the item system and building against your opponent, you lose before the match gets going.

Weak movement. Diagonal dash and wall bounce are the basics. Deadlock mixes Quake with Dota, so the shooter side weighs as much as the MOBA side.

No sense of timings. Soul Urn, Mid Boss, jungle camps, slot machines. If you do not know when each one appears, you play reactively instead of getting ahead of the enemy.

Silence on comms. This is a team game. Three people are coming at you and you say nothing? That is an int, just a slower one.

Golden rules for climbing

Build a pool of 3-4 heroes and master it. Do not change your roster every week. In ranked, consistency beats experimenting.

Counter-building is priority number one. The item guide read it before you go into ranked. This is where the biggest gap between ranks sits.

Movement basics before advanced techniques. Diagonal dash, then wall bounce, then combos. No skipping stages.

Settings matter. FPS optimisation stops being optional in ranked, when every millisecond counts.

Over the long run, mental weighs more than skill. Tilt after a loss eats 5 matches of protection in one evening. A break is part of the plan, not a weakness.

FAQ

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How long is calibration in Deadlock Ranked?

Calibration is 8 matches played solo.
