After the June patches his status changed: his tier dropped to a solid A tier at a 49.57% win rate, but with a clear upward trend (+0.8% over the last few weeks). He is no longer an auto-pick, but he is still one of the most effective heroes in the hands of a player who understands his kit - he applies damage over time that enemies cannot ignore, and you do not have to be a sniper to apply it.

This guide will show you how to think while playing Infernus - from the laning phase through the mid-game snowball to late-game teamfights where the entire enemy team burns at once.

Why Is Infernus A-Tier?

Infernus is a hybrid spirit/weapon carry with one of the best laning phases in the game. His Afterburn applies to every bullet that hits an enemy. With Infernus's high fire rate this means continuous damage the enemy cannot out-heal. Add Flame Dash for mobility and escape, Napalm for AoE zone control, and Concussive Combustion as a stunning ultimate - and you have a complete kit that is effective at every stage of the game.

Where Infernus is right now (June 2026)

Win rate dropped from April's 51.2% to 49.57% - the meta shifted toward heroes like Graves and McGinnis that are hard to balance, and Infernus is fairly... inconsistent against those picks. BUT the trend is upward, and the highest win-rate build path (Refresher at over 60%) shows that a well-built Infernus still wins. Patch 06-11 brought him two bugfixes: it fixed Afterburn max duration refreshing (now properly accounting for Debuff Resist and Ability Duration) and Concussive Combustion cooldown when getting CD-reducing items. These are quiet improvements, not nerfs.

What still makes him strong: Buffs to Vitality investment mean longer fights. And in longer fights Afterburn is BRUTAL, because burn damage stacks and ticks the whole time. The longer a fight lasts, the more damage Infernus deals relative to other heroes. Additionally, Spirit Lifesteal is absurdly effective on him - Afterburn heals you from every tick on every enemy hero in range. In a teamfight, when you are burning 3-4 people, your sustain is nearly infinite.

Infernus deals around 37,000 hero damage per match on average - still one of the higher numbers in the game. This is not a hero who does one big burst. This is a hero who does continuous, uninterrupted damage that cannot be ignored.

Abilities - What They Do and What Order to Level

Afterburn (1) - Your bullets apply ticking burn damage to enemies. The more bullets you land, the stronger the burn. This is your everything - poke, sustain (with Spirit Lifesteal), fight damage and wave clear. The 1 AP upgrade triples the burn damage for just 1,000 souls of investment.

Flame Dash (2) - A forward dash leaving a trail of fire. Your only mobility, your engage and your escape. At higher tiers it becomes a charge-based ability, which completely changes Infernus's mobility.

Napalm (3) - You throw a fireball that leaves a burning zone on the ground. Zone denial, extra burn, a tool for clearing camps. The 1 AP upgrade gives an extra charge.

Concussive Combustion (4) – Ultimate – Infernus uderza w ziemię, zadając AoE damage i ogłuszając wrogów w zasięgu. Na wyższych tierach zwiększa zasięg i czas ogłuszenia.

Leveling order:

Depends on the build. Dash Infernus, Afterburn Infernus, Ult Infernus... everything plays differently and basically however you like. Your playstyle - just pick whatever suits you :)

Why Flame Dash before Afterburn when maxing? Because Flame Dash with charges turns Infernus from a hero with one dash every 38 seconds into a machine for chasing, escaping and repositioning. Afterburn scales mainly off items (Spirit Power, Duration), so you do not need to max it early.

Build - Afterburn Carry (Main Build)

Focuses on maximizing burn damage through Spirit Power, Duration and Spirit Shred.

Early Game (0–3,000 souls):
– Extra Spirit – an instant boost to Afterburn damage. This build treats Afterburn as a bonus, with the main damage coming from the weapon.

Key Differences:
– Extended Magazine and Titanic Magazine as core (large magazine = long power output)
– Swift Striker early for fire rate
– Frenzy and Lucky Shot as late-game weapon items
– You still build Superior Duration and Toxic Bullets

When to play Gun Infernus: When your team already has a lot of spirit damage (e.g. Seven + Lady Geist) and needs someone with weapon output. Gun Infernus is more consistent in single-target DPS, but loses the mass AoE burn of the Afterburn build.

Game Phases

Laning Phase (0-8 minutes)

Infernus is one of the strongest laners in the game. Afterburn lets you terrorize opponents with constantly dropping HP.

After unlocking Flame Dash your aggression grows. Combo: Napalm on the enemy, Flame Dash into them, bullets with Afterburn - if they run, the burn finishes them. If they do not run, they die.

Do not waste Flame Dash without a reason. It has a 38-second cooldown early on. If you use it offensively and the enemy ganks you, you have no escape.

Mid Game (8-20 minutes)

After getting Superior Duration, Infernus turns into a beast. Burn lasts longer, Flame Dash lasts longer, everything is better. Your gameplan:

– Farm aggressively – Napalm + Afterburn clears camps in seconds (you can do 2 or 3 camps at once)
– Rotate to ganks – Flame Dash + Concussive Combustion (stun) + Afterburn = a sure kill on most champions
– Push lanes – Afterburn with Napalm clears waves instantly
– Contest the Midboss – Your burn DOT is perfect for continuous damage on the boss

Infernus synergizes best with Graves (+3.2% win rate delta) and Seven (+2.6% win rate delta). Graves adds burst and area control, Seven adds AoE spirit damage. If you play with a premade, these duos are the strongest options.

Late Game (20+ minutes)

With Boundless Spirit, Escalating Exposure, Spirit Rend and Ricochet, Infernus in a teamfight burns the entire enemy team at once. Ricochet bounces bullets to nearby enemies, each bullet applies Afterburn, and every Afterburn tick heals you through Spirit Lifesteal.

Late-game gameplan:
1. Concussive Combustion as an opener (stuns the entire group) works great on urns
2. Napalm to the feet (zone denial + additional burn)
3. Flame Dash to an optimal position
4. Fire Afterburn + Ricochet at the densest groups of enemies
5. Burn does the rest. Spirit Lifesteal keeps you alive

Your job in the late game is not to kill one enemy (usually - if the team is good). It is to burn ALL the enemies at once and be unkillable thanks to the lifesteal from burn damage.

Matchups

Who Infernus beats (favorable matchups):

– Bebop – Bebop is big, slow, and easy to hit. Mirage's mobility and burst make it difficult for Infernus to set the pace.
– Holliday (-1.1% delta) – After her June changes, Holliday controls space, and her displacement messes with Infernus' positioning.
– Calico (-1.0% delta) – High mobility and burst, difficult to keep in Afterburn's range.
– Dynamo – Classic problem: AoE heal negates burn damage, and Singularity pulls you out of position and breaks your DPS.

Tip for hard matchups: Against Mirage, Holliday and Calico, delay your power spike items and survive the bad matchup into mid-game by leaning on team synergy. Against Dynamo do not fight solo - his heal negates your burn. Play with the team and focus other targets. Buying items to survive early hurts your mid game a bit.

Common Mistakes

Wasting Flame Dash offensively in the laning phase. 38-second cooldown. Used Flame Dash to chase an enemy at 10% HP and missed? Great, but now the enemy roamer is ganking you and you have no escape. Early on, treat Flame Dash as an escape, not an engage.

Not buying Superior Duration. This is literally the most important item on Infernus. Without it your burn is short, your Flame Dash is short, everything is worse. If you have 3000 souls and no Superior Duration, you are building wrong.

Building full weapon without spirit. Afterburn scales with Spirit Power. If you build pure weapon damage, you ignore half of Infernus's kit. Gun Infernus exists, but even it builds Superior Duration and Toxic Bullets.

Entering a teamfight without Concussive Combustion. Your ult is an AoE stun. If you do not have it, you enter the fight without control. Save it for teamfights, do not use it on a single enemy (unless it is a key pick).

Ignoring jungle camps between fights. Infernus clears camps INSTANTLY. Napalm + a few Afterburn shots and the camp is gone. Between waves and rotations always grab a side camp. These are hundreds of souls you lose if you do not - and at the current 48.9% win rate, a farm advantage often decides the game.

FAQ

What is the best Infernus build in June 2026?
The Afterburn carry build with Spirit Power as the main scaling. Core items: Superior Duration (mandatory), Mystic Expansion, Greater Expansion, Boundless Spirit, Refresher, Toxic Bullets. Full build above.

Is Infernus hard to play?
No. Infernus is one of the most beginner-friendly heroes. Afterburn does not require precise aim - you just have to land bullets (and Infernus has a high fire rate and big magazine). Flame Dash is intuitive. Napalm is AoE. The ult is AoE. The kit is simple - the difficulty is in understanding when to fight and when to take farm.

How do you counter Infernus?
Dynamo is the classic counter - AoE heal negates the burn. Anti-heal items (Healbane, Toxic Bullets) reduce his Spirit Lifesteal. CC interrupts his damage flow. Mobile heroes like Mirage or Calico make it hard for him to keep you in burn range. Keep your distance and do not stand in his Napalm.

Is Infernus a carry or a support?
A carry. Infernus is Pos 1 or Pos 2 in the position system. He needs farm priority to reach his item spikes (Superior Duration, Boundless Spirit). Playing him as a support makes no sense - his kit scales with items, not with the abilities alone.

Afterburn or Flame Dash to max first?
Flame Dash. The charges from maxing completely change Infernus's mobility. Depends on your playstyle though - the power spike from Tier 3 Afterburn is also nice.

What is Infernus's win rate?
Let's say stable in the range of ~49.57% down to 48% depending on the rank bracket (the higher the rank, the harder Infernus is to play).

Which items have the highest win rate on Infernus?
Greater Expansion, Superior Duration. Items to avoid: Disarming Hex, Spirit Sap, Return Fire.

—

Want to see Infernus in live action? Join the stream. Want to analyze your gameplay 1:1?
